Meet Osiris, a lovely three-year-old Dutch Shepherd, and his loyal friend, Riff Rat, a fury, household rat. Yes, you read that right, a Dutch Shepherd is best friends with a household rat!
“Why in the world would these two creatures get along with each other? How did they even meet?” you might ask. Well, it’s thanks to their owner’s kindness; she rescued the four-week-old rat from the streets and nursed him to health with the help of a syringe.
After that, Riff Rat was adopted permanently.
The Dutch Shepherd actually has a similar story as Riff Rat. Osiris was found abandoned in a Detroit parking lot. Mickey Alice Kwapis, Osiris’s fur mom, recounts that it was Thanksgiving weekend at that time, and she was asked to foster the pup for the weekend. But before the weekend was over, Kwapis was head over heels with the lovely dog, so she decided to keep him.
To be honest, adopting a street rat might not be one of the most pleasant things that people could hear. Also, the idea of bringing home a rodent in a house with an existing pet dog might be a disaster waiting to happen. Fortunately, it isn’t in their case.
Instead of a disaster, an unexpected friendship was born between a dog and a rat. Both of them have learned to love and appreciate each other despite their many differences.
Osiris has been delighted by Riff Rat’s hard-to-resist traits, such as being kind, lovable, and smart. Kwapis was even surprised by these things because, as we all know, rats have a dirty image of being a pest that must be eradicated. Her adopted rodent proved that there were more to rats than being a mere household pest!
The two creatures might not intend to do it, but they unknowingly taught the world an important lesson: that difference is not a hindrance to express the power of love. Despite their differences, Osiris and Riff Rat proved that love and friendship could grow and be cultivated anywhere – even in the unlikeliest creatures. Just imagine if humanity can do the same thing.
