A dog-owner thought that if they kept feeding their dog, it would be enough to make him happy. What they didn’t realize is that they are giving their pet a death sentence. When the dog, Kai, became severely overweight, he developed a lot of physical problems. At 173 pounds, the Golden Retriever found it very difficult to move.
Because of the dog’s obesity, the dog’s owners decided to put the dog down. But the vet was taken by the dog’s sweetness and adorable character, so he decided to give the pooch another chance. The vet called Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue and asked if they could help.
Pam Heggie, from the rescue organization, made it her personal mission to help Kai. She decided to foster him so that she can work with him every day. Pam knew that Kai’s weight problem could be fatally dangerous, so she needs to do everything she could to help. Kai needed to lose a hundred pounds, according to the vet.
Pam took Kai home and as expected, the dog struggled with his new life. When they first arrived at Pam’s house, it took the dog twenty minutes just to walk from the driveway, go up the short stairs, and into the house. Pam’s plan was simple, give him a proper diet and exercise regularly.
Pam and Kai would take three walks a day, every day. It didn’t matter if it was raining or snowing, or the sun was boiling, Pam and Kai would go out and exercise. To help him bolster his strength and stamina, Kai would also do water therapy. The whole routine was exhausting, not just to the dog. But Pam kept on; Kai was such a very lovable dog that Pam was inspired to help him out.
After a year, they were able to reach their goal. Kai was always a happy and fun-loving dog, but with his recent weight loss, it was evident that he became even happier. And because of their strengthened bond during their weight loss journey, Pam decided to adopt Kai. Their story is so amazing that they were featured as guests in Good Morning America.
