A Florida man and his dog are both recovering after they got up close and personal with one of Florida’s alligators. The last thing Mike McCoy expected during a routine walk with his chocolate Labrador, Jake, was a tussle with a 7-foot alligator, but that was what he did that day when a gator tried to eat his beloved pup for breakfast.
Mike McCoy was walking his dog, Jake, near a pond right behind Paul R. Smith Middle school in Holiday when a gator sprang out of the water and pulled Jake under. Paul R. Smith Middle school teacher Kelly Mallen was on the second floor when she saw what happened. According to her, it was like a snake darting super fast.
Kelly also saw Mike jump into the water to save his dog. The gator was giving Jake the death roll. Luckily for the pup, his dad was not going to let the gator have his way. Mike uses his thumb to poke the alligator in the eye and picked it off the ground so it couldn’t go anywhere. Eventually, after several minutes of wrestling in the water, the gator let Jake go.
With Jake finally out of the gator’s jaws of death, the prehistoric predator turned its attention to Mike. The gator somehow thought that if it couldn’t have Jake, it’ll have Mike instead.
Mike and Jake both got stitches, but thankfully, nothing serious. The school nurse on duty that day even helped bandage Mike up. Florida Fish and Wildlife estimated the gator to be 7-9 feet long. They are working with an animal trapper to remove the gator from the pond. Attacks like this are rare, but Florida Fish and Wildlife warn people to be careful around water, especially during warmer months.
People might say that Mike was crazy for fighting that alligator, but Mike says he didn’t think twice about what he did.
