Starfish was a sheltered German shepherd puppy that couldn’t walk. Luckily many people helped her in her journey to regain leg function.
Starfish was brought to Holistic Veterinary Care by a breeder. Upon first inspection, the vet techs suggested that she should be put down. Fortunately, the head of the shelter walked in and told the nurses to get a second opinion.
Leigh Anne Gray was a volunteer at the shelter that was a partner of the vet clinic. She offered to foster and overlook Starfish’s progress.
Leigh Ann took Starfish to a different vet that diagnosed the puppy with swimmers syndrome. Starfish’s condition caused her to move her in strokes like a swimmer.
The two had already formed a strong bond. From the moment she and Starfish met, Leigh Ann was determined to help her get better.
Leigh Ann immediately researched the best rehab center for Starfish. Since the puppy was still young, she had a solid chance to walk again.
Journey to recovery
The trainers at the rehab center all loved and rooted for Starfish. They saw that despite her condition, Starfish never stopped trying to walk.
Starfish’s therapy began immediately. Her trainers hoisted her up with a cloth on her waist to supper her weight. When that didn’t work, they tried doing hydrotherapy.
Every day, for a few hours, Starfish would walk underwater on a treadmill or go swimming to strengthen her muscles. Starfish responded significantly with whatever treatment she was receiving.
It didn’t take long before Starfish could finally walk. After just two months in rehab, Starfish mastered her balanced and was able to run.
Leigh Ann was so glad that Starfish could finally play and act like a puppy. A few days pass, and Starfish already blossomed into a very playful and affectionate puppy.
