Rescue dogs come to animal shelters for a dozen different reasons and in hundreds of different states. Some dogs are unfortunate enough to have suffered difficult lives on the streets or had to deal with abusive owners that they arrive in very bad states. Other times, dogs are left at shelters not because they aren’t wanted, but the family that had them simply can’t afford to keep them. The latter often happens when the pooch gets sick or injured and needs medical attention.
This is what happened to a sixteen-year-old Chihuahua named Tito. The elderly doggie was suffering from a collapsed trachea and also had a mass on his back that made him unable to walk properly – needing someone to carry him wherever the pup needed to go. Although his owner loved Tito, he was also in poor health and could no longer give the pooch the care that was needed.
Although badly disabled and sick, the people in the shelter refused to write the Chihuahua off as a lost cause. The vets were able to come up with a treatment plan to nurse the doggie back to health. Since this included assistance in treating his breathing, rescue staff member Kristina Helfer decided to foster Tito so she could attend to him properly.
Kristina had already adopted two rescue dogs named Piper and Frank when she brought the senior Chihuahua home to foster. Little did she know they would be a big help in the small dog’s recovery! Kristina’s two-year-old Pit Bull, Frank, is also a rescue dog and suffers from anxiety – this makes it hard for the big doggie to comfortably socialize with other pooches. However, Frank’s immediate bond with the elder Chihuahua was made apparent when the younger dog took on the role of being a nurse to Tito and attending to the little dog’s needs.
The two pooches became so inseparable that Frank even allowed the disabled dog to ride his back when they go out for walks in place of his weighted vest. The care and affection the Pittie has showered upon the old dog have shown everyone just how sweet their breed truly is behind the stereotype. Their friendship became so tight-knit that Kristina ultimately chose to adopt the Chihuahua instead of having to separate the two for good.
