At one point in a dog owner’s life, they’d wish that their dogs could talk so they can express what they want. As dog owners, we want to understand our pet dogs so we can take care of them better. We want to know if they’re hungry so we can give them food, and we want to know if they want to go to the park to meet and play with their friends.
A speech pathologist named Christina taught her puppy named Stella to communicate using words. While dogs can’t really talk, Christina was able to train Stella to recognize words and build a device that speaks for Stella. The device has multiple buttons and each button is associated with a word.
When Stella presses on a button, an audio equivalent of the word is played through a speaker that is attached to the device. It’s a simple yet ingenious solution that helps Christina understand Stella more. Christina’s training for Stella to communicate resulted in Stella actually constructing sentences and phrases to communicate with her mom, Christina.
Whenever Stella wants to go to the park, Stella would press a few buttons on the device and construct a sentence that expresses her desire to go out and go to the park. There’s no more guessing game for Christina since Stella is accurately telling Christina what she wants to do or even how she feels.
Dogs are incredibly smart animals. They can understand us but they just need help getting understood. Christina thought that what she did with Christina was already done but she realized that she and Stella were the first ones to do it.
Stella gets what she wants using the buttons. When Stella wants to play, she pushes on the play button and grabs her toy, and then gives it to Christina. Stella now has quite a lot of buttons to push and she also learned to construct phrases and sentences that are quite complex. Here’s a remarkable video showing how Christina taught Stella how to talk.
