Laurie Marcotte was suffering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy when she chanced upon the picture of a little chihuahua on Facebook. The small pooch, named Motto by his rescuers, was found in Lewiston, Maine, dumped by his previous owners on the side of the road.
Scared and confused, the chihuahua hid near some trash. Some kind souls saw him, and they called the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society so that he could be rescued. They featured the dog on their social media accounts, and Laurie took it upon herself to help the dog. She offered to foster him.
One big ulcer
Laura’s decision to foster the senior dog was motivated by Motto’s backstory. When the small dog was brought to the shelter, the staff noticed that her mouth was frothing, and there was a terrible odor coming from the inside. According to them, the smell was unbearable, and they could hardly stomach it.
To discover the root cause of the stench, they sent the pooch to a vet. After a thorough checkup, the vet said that Motto had a severe case of dental disease. All his teeth were rotting, and the insides of his mouth were like one big ulcer. This is probably the reason why his owners abandoned him.
The vet removed all of Motto’s teeth, and they had to clean his mouth several times each day. They also put him on a special diet. Thankfully, their treatment worked.
Comfort and strength
Once Laurie fostered the dog, she knew right away that she made the right decision. The dog provided her comfort and strength while she underwent her treatment sessions. At the same time, the dog benefitted from the love and care that was shown to him. They snuggled a lot, and it brought positivity around them.
After a few months, Laurie finished her treatment and showed assuring and positive results, Motto, on the other hand, found his forever home.
